Iranian professor wins 2020 ICTP Prize

TEHRAN (ISW)— Dr. Mehdi Kargarian, faculty member of the Department of Physics of SUT, won the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) prize in 2020. Dr. Kargarian shared the stage with Dibyendu Roy from Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, India.

The core of Mehdi Kargarian’s research in concerned with topological phases and strongly correlated electrons. He has discovered two of the first examples of fractionalized topological phases where both electron-electron interactions and spin-orbit coupling are important. He also predicted new phases of matter which are known as “weak topological Mott insulator” and the “topological crystalline Mott insulator”.

Dr. Mehdi Kargarian got his Ph.D. from Sharif University of Technology in 2009; then, he was a Postdoc researcher at University of Texas at Austin (4 years), Ohio University (2 years), and University of Maryland (2 years). Since 2017, he has been conducting fascinating research with his research group at the Department of Physics of Sharif University of Technology.
